Week #6: The "Sunflower Activity" (Cycle of a Plant's Life) with pitched instrument up and down the musical scale.

Welcome back, and I hope you have been having a wonderful week of musical fun with your group!

Lesson Overview

This week our lesson focus is an introduction to the concept of the musical "scale". You will discover the activities that I have offered children over the years to help them experience "ascending" and "descending" the scale in music. There are movement, singing, and instrument playing activities to introduce little ones to the tones of the scale in music. (ex: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C)

These have been some of the all-time favorites of the children I have worked with over the years!

You will be using a "pitched" instrument that has a true tone, such as an Orff-Schulwerk GLOCKENSPIEL, the traditional Montessori Brass Bells, a Piano, or even a pitch pipe.  If you are not familiar with pitch pipes, click the link to see one at Amazon.

In the videos, I will be using a Studio 49 Glockenspiel that I have had for over 20 years and it still sounds so beautiful!  I will also show a "substitute" set of "Montessori style bells" made in China, that I don't recommend purchasing, but mostly wanted to show you some ways to use the real Italian-made Montessori Brass Bells, if you happen to have these in your environment.

I will also be using a felt board story based on the Cycle of the Sunflower, and you can download my pattern at the end of this lesson, or make your own, or even look around on TpT or at educational supply companies for a more "polished" felt board set for the cycle of a flower.

Another activity that my groups love is the "Birdwatcher's Duet" from the Magic Flute (Mozart) and I provided a lovely template for making stick puppets to go along with an extension for this activity.

And, there are mp3's from me this week that I hope you and your group enjoy!

THIS IS WHAT IS IN THE LESSON THIS WEEK:

1) 4 VIDEOS

  • Les 6 Music Circle: Part One
  • Les 6 Music Circle: Part Two
  • Les 6 Extensions
  • Les 6 Music Shelf

2) Thought questions and a place to comment after each video

3) PDF Download

4) MP3 song downloads

YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE A NICELY TUNED PITCHED INSTRUMENT TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT THE MUSICAL SCALE SOUNDS LIKE.

ALSO, THE SUNFLOWER FELTBOARD PIECES WORK BEST ON A FELTBOARD, SO I RECOMMEND YOU HAVE ONE AVAILABLE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT.

THE CHILDREN WILL BE USING RHTYHM STICKS AGAIN, AND LATER, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO EXPLORE THE FELTBOARD STORY AS A SHELF WORK.
